Art Deco Panels (process shot)

Art Deco Panels - studio shot during gilding process; R Williamson; 2/3/22

A project that was started during this same time last year, a series of Art Deco panels in finally taking its final shape in my studio. Shown above are the first three of the eight panels that comprise a wall installation in a private residence in Seattle.

Based on an historical lacquerware piece by Irish born Art Deco designer, Eileen Gray, this piece is made from incised MDF panels that have been painted a solid dark bitter chocolate brown. The recessed lines and shapes are then gilded with 12 carat white gold and sealed. While the inspiration by Gray was a free-standing folding screen she did in Paris in the early ‘20’s, these panels will instead be surface mounted on a paneled wall in the entry to the contemporary home.
